About Candice

My Story
Candice is a transplanted Tribagonian physician and artist whose vibrant work is deeply rooted in her Caribbean heritage. Raised in a community rich with folklore, soca and calypso music, and artistic expression, Candice's art reflects the colorful landscapes, rhythmic beats, and resilient spirit of Trinidad and Tobago. Her bold, expressive brushstrokes and intricate details celebrate Caribbean culture and history, aiming to spark dialogue and deepen understanding of the region's richness.
Artistic Statement
Welcome to my work! I am a visual artist who loves to explore life through travel, culture food and conversations; these experiences are the source of my inspiration and the foundation of my art.
As a Trinbagonian woman, my culture - rich with joy, energy, pre and postcolonial history, and vibrant color - deeply informs my creative voice. My work reflects these roots with a modern twist, weaving together the past and present.
For me, creating is healing. My process usually begins with a subject that captivates me through its shape, color, texture, or form. I'm drawn to bold, vivid palettes, and I enjoy experimenting with contrasting black elements and touches of mixed media.
As a body of work evolves, I often notice themes of contrasts, balance, and harmony - yet they are never without conflict. A tension between my belief of what it should be versus what the painting demands to be; elements of control versus elements of freedom. Over time, I have learned to surrender to this process and accept the work as its own entity. It's in that surrender that something unexpected and serendipitous often emerges bringing the work to finality.
